Windows 7 - The Release...

About a week ago, I upgraded my Windows 7 from Windows 7 RC1 Ultimate to Windows 7 Enterprise - the actual release.  If you were following me on Twitter, you will see that the upgrade actually took about 1.5 hours, but that was after first running the upgrade and finding out I had to remove some software before I could upgrade.

To get the upgrade to work, I needed to hack my Windows 7 Ultimate.  I followed the information here.  I already knew about changing the ISO to allow me to upgrade my version, but I did not know how to make the registry changes to make Windows 7 Ultimate look like Windows 7 Enterprise.

The upgrade process went very smoothly.  I was asked very few questions and just watched my system reboot four times in the upgrade process.  Each time the system rebooted, I worried if it would come back.  I did notice that during the reboot, there was a screen along the way that would let me roll back the system.

When I was done, I had to change the product key by going to Start|Computer and right clicking on Computer and selecting Properties.  From there, at the bottom of the screen, you can click a link to "Change product key".  If you do not, your system is not activated and I think bad things will happen in 30 days.

First Thoughts

I have not found a lot of differences between Windows 7 RC1 and Windows 7.  I did find that suspend finally works when I close the lid on my notebook.  I have enjoyed Windows 7 since the beta and continue enjoying working with it over XP and Vista.
