I have been a progammer ever since I touched a computer. On the first TRS-80, I learned BASIC. I taught myself most of the language back in high school and that got me interested learning Computer Science when I went onto University.
In University, they frist taught me Pascal. I liked what I learned about Pascal back in the early 80s and within a short period of time, I could get it to do about anything I needed. Other than the language, I learned how to format and make my programs readable, which I carried onto the many other languages I would learn over the years.
The list of languages that I have learned over the years seems very long. The languages include assembly, Fortan, LISP, C, ane C++, just to name a few. Over the years, I have settled on using Perl for most of my current work. I do not program a lot any more as I am not being paid for my programming skills, but I continue to use programs to solve some day to day problems. I find Perl to be a very good language and because of CPAN, there are many libraries available to assist in a developing a solution.
But today, I find myself drawn to Python. I am not sure why, may be I am just up for the challenge of a new programming language, may be I hear there are a lot of Google tools based on Python, or may be I hear it is a better language than Perl. I am not certain. I have written a few short programs so far in Python and this weekend I picked up "Learning Python" by Mark Lutz.
Either way, I am going to start to learn Python and see where it takes me. I will keep you updated with my progress.

Goodluck with python
I msyelf have been learning python for about almost a year or so now (concurrently, before that it was on and off) and am loving the language.
I just hope your experience will be as fun as mine :)
Goodluck and happy pythoning
